Novelty

The noun novelty is the state of being new or having an unusual experience.

Synonyms are freshness, originality, unfamiliarity, or difference.

The word origins from the Old French noveleté meaning “newness, innovation, change, news, new fashion” (Modern French nouveauté), where novel means “new”. The meaning “newness” is attested from late 14th century. The sense of “useless but amusing object” is attested from 1901 (as in novelty shop, 1973).
