Impede

The verb impede means to make it more difficult for someone to do something or more difficult for something to happen.

Synonyms are hinder, obstruct, block, or delay.

The word is a back-formation from impediment or it origins from Latin (1600) impedire meaning “impede, be in the way, hinder, detain” literally “to shackle the feet”. It is derived out of the assimilated form of in- “into, in” plus pes meaning “foot”.

Do not do anything that will impede your learning.

A number of factors impeded the completion of the project.

I failed a lot of times, which hindered my progress but I didn’t let my failures impede my learning.
