The word origins from Old French (12th Century) denoncier (Modern French dénoncer) and directly from Latin denuntiare meaning “to announce, proclaim, denounce, menace, command, order”. It is derived out of de- meaning “down” plus nuntiare meaning “proclaim, announce” and nuntius meaning “messenger”.
