The noun bigot describes a person who is intolerant of any other idea, opinion or religion other than his own.
Synonyms are extremist, racist, fanatic or maniac.
The word origins from French (1590s) used as “sanctimonious person, religious hypocrite”. It was also proposed to relate to Spanish bigote meaning “mustache”, but there was never enough evidence. Another theory comes from the Normans “bi God”, meaning “by god”, but also this theory can not be fully explained. Calling someone today a bigot is an offence towards that person.
He was never an oppressor and a bigot, despite how the majority of his followers assumed him to be.
Tom was seen as a bigot, being intolerant of any other ideas and refused to listen.
What an old bigot, incapable of change and forward thinking.
